The ark of the covenant was overlaid with pure gold on the outside and the inside to teach us that it is not sufficient to be righteous only in the eyes of men.

"God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7).

He knows our every motive, so we can sing, sing, sing all the day long and we can still be wrong. Prune the inside cause this is where the well springs of life truly flow. 

Men see with the eyes, but God sees the heart so why do you struggle so much with how people look at you? The gold on the outside will never reflect what lies within. Only God knows and that is where all of our cares should lie and it will then naturally flow to the outside.
